My heritage, going back many moons, is from the Scottish Highlands. There are stories from WWI that say the enemy referred to the highlanders as the “Devil Ladies” or “The Woman from Hell” …a play on the fact that the Highlanders still showed up in kilts for campaigns, and they were relentless… True or not, the traditions of old can tell us a lot about who we are today and history helps put today’s world in perspective.
For those reading this, we survived another election cycle. This year more than ever it seems, was traumatic, but if you are willing to wind the clock back with me and actually read more details of our American history… you might find a different story.
Solomon of old is correct…. “There is nothing new under the sun.”
The year is 1783, seven years from the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Our country is in flux, and this independence thing is a leap into the unknown. Though we all think the signing of the Declaration meant life was good and we instantly, like prepackaged cream of wheat, just appeared like a whole nation. We were still a disconnected set of colonies with different governments and ideas. The thought of us being a unified group of Americans was far from being true. News, if any, came through the printing press and word traveled slowly. This is a concept our modern-day perspective doesn’t comprehend. Today, we know what the President has for breakfast!
In September of 1783, the official end of the Revolutionary War took place with the treaty being signed by our founders. Yorktown had occurred in 1781 and for our fledgling country, it was a long, drawn-out battle. However, in June of 1783, 400 armed members of the military stormed Philadelphia and drove congress out of the city.
The issue…
No pay.
When you hear in today’s media terms like “unprecedented”, “never before”, well, let’s be honest, that’s not entirely accurate…and let’s just say, anytime the media makes a statement, you can bet, it’s not the entire story.
If you think today’s hyperbole is over the top, let’s peel open the yellowed pages of history again. Papers across the nation published some of the most hateful, terrible things about our leaders and Presidents.
Alexander Hamilton was called, “Bastard brat of a Scott Peddler”.
President Ulysses S. Grant, “A Drunken Trouser-Maker”.
President Franklin Pierce, “Pimp of the Whitehouse”
President John Adams, “Hermaphroditical”
To say we’ve never heard or seen days like the days we are living in just isn’t true. What is true is, unless you are a student of history, this is more normal than you think.
Add to the mix today’s generation that is 100% connected to everything, all of the time, and you have a running commentary of foolishness that flows like Niagra falls.
So why ‘guard your heart’?
Even if you aren’t a believer or a person of faith, let’s think about this. We are told to think about these things.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things.” Phil. 4:8
When I see and let’s all be honest, we are seeing it all around us, friends, family, and acquaintances being pulled into the fake drama of the made-up world of politics, and I feel it pull on me, I have to ask myself… It’s it really good for me? You have ONE vote. Does it really take 4 years of blasting media attention for you to figure out who you feel and think about a candidate? Does it take 4 years of rhetoric to finally decide what side of the fence you might fall on?
My in-laws have a wonderful perspective on movies and stories. They ask the question… “Do I want to spend time with those folks?” What a great way to think about listening to all of the junk we call popular media. Do you want to hang out with those folks?
Nope
The vile, finger-pointing, name-calling accusations that are flung 24 by 7 aren’t just painted on the wall of our lives. Without putting up a guard around your heart, It can seep into our souls like the cold in Vermont seeps into your bones.
Just food for thought. If your life has narrowed down to following only the made-up world of drama you get from your chosen media outlet… maybe it’s time to go and invest your life into something more life-giving instead of life taking.

Somewhere within the paragraphs you were able to make me a believer unfortunately just for a while.
